A-LIST: THE ILLUSIONIST + THE PRESTIGE
Since this is a blog about filmmaking, I wanted to start something new. When I was training for my marathons, I definitely watched my fair share of movies, especially after a long run (when I couldn't move). But with so many new releases on DVD and in theatres every week, how do you know what's worth watching? That's why I'm starting the A-LIST (get it?). Ok I'm no Ebert, but I promise you won't find any duds on this list (I promise).
Two films that I saw recently that are definitely worth checking out are The Illusionist and The Prestige. Both are 2006 films about magicians that take place in 20th-century Europe. I know what you're thinking -- how exciting can that really be?
What's great about both films is that their stories are structured like big, elaborate magic tricks. Both have great endings that rank up there with the Sixth Sense, The Usual Suspects, and The Others.
The Prestige is directed by Christopher Nolan, the man behind Memento and Batman Begins. The Illusionist stars Edward Norton (aka, The Incredible Hulk) and is produced by the co-producer of Crash.
