TIMES SQUARE: FITNESS CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE

It's the evening rush hour in Times Square, New York and there's the usual flurry of tourists, taxis, and office workers all crowding the streets. But on this summer night, something is definitely different. On a balcony above the Reuters digital sign is a guy who's been running on a treadmill for nearly 20 hours. On the island intersection between Broadway and 7th Avenue, lies a large group of men and women practicing yoga. It's another "only in New York" moment.

The guy running on the treadmill, above the Reuters billboard, is none other than Ultramarathon Man, Dean Karnazes. He was participating in a promotional event to help launch Accelerade sports drink to the masses by attempting to run over 154 miles in 24 hours on a treadmill (he ended up completing over 128 miles, just one marathon short of his goal).

What's interesting is that Accelerade was recently acquired by Cadbury Schwepps (the makers of Dr. Pepper, Dentine, and the Cadbury Easter Egg). Prior to being acquired, Accelerade could only be found in specialty bike and running shops. Now it's being positioned to go up against Gatorade and Powerade with a $50 million ad campaign -- the biggest launch in Cadbury's beverage history.

The other fitness event was a "yoga-fest in the heart of Times Square" to celebrate Summer Solstice -- the longest day of the year. It's a remarkable site to see people bending and stretching in an intersection while cars and busses are whizzing by. Only in New York.

Check out the photos on Flickr and watch this video of Dean's run from Fox 5 News.
