The short film I shot for Liz Claiborne Inc., "Runway of Opportunity", was featured on the Wall Street Journal's site earlier this week. It was also written about in an industry trade publication, ERE.net, last week.

Thanks Matt for sending.

CLINTON GLOBAL INITIATIVE

In my previous post about filming Lance Armstrong's Dual Mission yesterday, I didn't get a chance to mention what the Clinton Global Initiative is all about. CGI is an organization founded by former President Bill Clinton to help solve many of the world's biggest problems involving poverty, health, education and the environment.

The emphasis is on action. Members, who consist of world leaders, philanthropists, CEOs, and scholars, are required to establish specific commitments to action in addressing a global challenge (those who don't follow through are not allowed back).

For the past four years, CGI has hosted an annual gathering in NYC to celebrate achievements and establish new commitments. An ideal setting for the Lance Armstrong Foundation to launch its global cancer awareness campaign. Even though I was originally there to film Lance's announcement, I felt compelled to check out the other events. Here are some highlights...

U2's Bono with former Vice President Al Gore on a discussion panel.

They're joined by Queen Rania of Jordan.

Bill Gates talks about his foundation's work with Clinton.

Tom Brokow discusses the topic of energy with San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom.

Drew Barrymore, who is an Ambassador for the UN's World Food Programme, makes a commitment against hunger.

Barack Obama speaks to the audience via satellite.

CNBC anchor Maria Bartiromo hosts the Clinton Global Citizen Awards.

I'm not into James Taylor (sorry Mr. President), but when he performed "You've Got a Friend", I got the chills. It was the perfect song for the evening and the overall event.

That's all folks. Thanks again Lauren and Meghan. What a great two days.

By the way, check out MyCommitment.org to learn how you can establish your own commitment to action.

A DUAL MISSION

Man, what a morning. Just returned from the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI), where I got to hear (and film) Lance Armstrong discuss his foundation's new global fight against cancer and his return to cycling. When asked by a reporter how getting back on a bike would benefit his crusade, he replied by saying an active athlete is more effective than a retired one.

Between Lance's remarks at the Opening Plenary Session and the press conference that followed, the emphasis was less on whether he'd win an eighth Tour (yes, he's joining Johan Bruyneel at Team Astana), and more on how his foundation will work to help cancer patients worldwide.

What an extraordinary day. It was exciting to witness this historic moment in person. Even more exciting to capture it on film to complete Jenny's segment of ATHLETE. This was made possible by Lauren Pfeifle of Edelman/Lance Armstrong Foundation and Meghan Linehan of the Clinton Global Initiative. Thank you both very much.

Visit the LIVESTRONG blog to watch both events online.

THE CYCLE OF GIVING

I may not be able to divulge much about what happens in ATHLETE. But there's one thing I can mention and that's the significance of charities in the film. Specifically, how organizations like Achilles and Team in Training play an important part in the athletes' lives and their stories.

With the documentary, I hope to help raise awareness and funds for the charities featured in ATHLETE. It's something I'll be working on in the coming months, along with a plan for the film's release/distribution. A lot to do even after the final cut is complete.

But, you know what? You don't have to wait until ATHLETE comes out to take part in the "Cycle of Giving". What's that you ask? It's what I witnessed while working on the film. It's when everyday individuals contribute their time and/or money to make a difference in someone else's life. And as you'll see in the documentary, those who benefit from charities give back as much as they can. That's the Cycle of Giving.

Check out the four organizations featured in the film, and learn how you can take part in the Cycle of Giving. Today.

Achilles Track Club:
Founded 25 years ago, Achilles encourages individuals with all types of disabilities to participate in running events as well as triathlons. One of the subjects in the film, Artie, is a 62-year old blind athlete and an active member of the NYC chapter. (achillestrackclub.org)

Girls on the Run:
I had never heard of GOTR prior to working on ATHLETE. I learned about them through twin sister subjects Kellie and Carrie, whose good friend founded a local chapter in Cincinnati (and appears in the film with the twins). GOTR "encourages preteen girls to develop self-respect and healthy lifestyles through running". (girlsontherun.org)

Team in Training: TNT offers everyday athletes professional training and support for marathons, triathlons, and century bike rides. In return, participants help raise much-needed funds to fight blood cancers including leukemia and lymphoma. Cancer survivor and ATHLETE subject, Jenny, signed up with TNT shortly after completing treatment and has raised a significant amount of money for the organization over the last six years. (teamintraining.org)

Lance Armstrong Foundation: Covering Jenny's story reminded me of another cancer survivor and athlete -- Lance Armstrong. The idea of featuring him and his foundation in the film is to show how similar their lives have been (athlete > patient > survivor > athlete > leader in the fight against cancer), and that you don't need to be a seven-time Tour de France champion to make a difference. You too can take part in the fight. (livestrong.org)

MOGWAI

Mogwai is Chinese for "ghost" or "demon". It's also the name of an indie rock band from Glasgow, Scotland. They got their name from the movie Gremlins. Still with me?

I first came across their music on the soundtrack to Michael Mann's Miami Vice (the film, not the show) and have been a fan since. They specialize in guitar instrumentals. Their music is ideal before the start of a race or during early morning workouts (Kellie).

Best tracks are "Auto Rock" and "We're No Here". Caught them live at Terminal 5 tonight (good venue but man is it out of the way; 56th and 11th ave; that's like the edge of the universe).

They handed out flyers for an upcoming documentary on French soccer star Zinedine Zidane, which features original music by Mogwai. Looks cool. Was directed by two artists so you know it's not going to be the "same old, same old". A modern take on the sports documentary. Whaddya know?

ATHLETE INBOX

Received the following email from Andrew, an everyday athlete in NY, who will be running his first marathon in Chicago next month.

(click to read)

So to answer Andrew's question, the goal is to finish the film by the end of December and premiere it at a festival in the first half of 2009. Stay tuned.

Thanks again Andrew for your email and best of luck in Chicago.

NIKE+ HUMAN RACE

Took part in the Nike+ Human Race in New York on Sunday. My first race since the Chicago Marathon in 2005. I forgot how much I dislike running (more than three miles). But it was nice to be back in that race atmosphere (I do miss that), and plus it was for a good cause.

A boat full of runners. The ferry to Randall's Island for the race.

Icahn Stadium on Randall's Island.

Ran for the Lance Armstrong Foundation.

Ummm, ok...it's the "Naked Cowboy" everyone.

A whole lotta red.

A unique finisher's medal (a bracelet).

Even though the race was only a 10K (6.2 miles), I didn't train for it at all. In fact, I haven't run in months. So you know what that means. There's going to be some hurtin' this week.
