Was at the
Posteritati gallery earlier today and picked up their latest book,
Art of the Modern Movie Poster. It's amazing that, after living in NYC all these years, I only recently learned about this gallery located in SoHo/Little Italy. A place that's been around for 12 years and houses an impressive collection of over 12,000 (mostly vintage) original movie poster prints.
While at a screening of
The Wrestler at Lincoln Center
in December, I picked up a promotional postcard for Posteritati's new book and was instantly inspired. It was a timely discovery, since I was beginning work on the last series of posters for
ATHLETE. Several titles featured on the postcard really inspired the look of the final
ATHLETE posters (which I haven't released yet).
They include
Blow-Up,
Rashomon,
Mon Oncle and
La Dolce Vita. With the exception of
Rashomon, I wasn't familiar with any of these films from the 50's and 60's. But I was really drawn to how simple and minimal the designs were for their posters. Solid colored backgrounds with mostly black and white imagery.
As for the book, it's huge. Weighs a ton. Over 500 pages and 1,500 posters. Thank goodness for President's Day.
